Time zone comparison
Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST, UTC+10:00) vs Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+00:00). Right now AEST is 10h ahead of GMT.
Heads up: these zones diverge on daylight saving.
AEST observes DST while GMT does not, so the gap shifts by an hour twice a year. In January the difference is 11h, in July it is 10h. If you are scheduling across the spring or autumn transitions, double-check the date.
Each row is one hour. Green rows are when both sides are inside 9 AM to 5 PM.

Australian Eastern Standard Time runs ten hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. London-to-Sydney is the canonical anti-podal corridor in global business, with a 10-hour gap in UK winter and a 9-hour gap when both sides are mid-summer. When London is at 9 AM, Sydney is at 7 PM, which is past office hours but inside what many Sydney teams accept as legitimate end-of-day client time. The practical shared window is 8-10 AM London (6-8 PM Sydney in winter), which is the very end of Sydney's working day and the start of London's. Push the call later than 10 AM London (8 PM Sydney) and Sydney is at dinner. Push it earlier than 7 AM London (5 PM Sydney) and the London side has not arrived. AEST runs to AEDT (UTC+11) from October to April, which is the Australian summer; the UK runs to BST (UTC+1) from March to October, which is the UK summer. The two DST seasons overlap for half the year, creating a 9-hour gap in March-April and October-November, and a 10-hour gap in May-September. Most London-Sydney teams accept the gap as immovable and rotate inconvenience between the two sides.
Narrow overlap from 7-10 AM London (5-8 PM Sydney in winter, 6-9 PM in summer), with 8 AM London the safest default.
Default to 8 AM London (6 PM Sydney in winter, 7 PM Sydney in summer-aligned). Sydney is at end-of-day, London is just starting. For follow-the-sun handoffs, Sydney end-of-day write-ups (5 PM Sydney, 7 AM London in winter) hand off cleanly to London at office open. London end-of-day write-ups (5 PM London, 3 AM Sydney next day in winter) wait for Sydney to start. For one-off urgent calls, 9 AM London (7 PM Sydney) is workable but pushes Sydney into their evening. Avoid recurring weekly meetings later than 10 AM London (8 PM Sydney).
Sydney is the largest financial center in Australia and a major regional hub for Asia-Pacific banking and consulting. The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) opens at 10 AM AEST (12 AM GMT in winter) and closes at 4 PM AEST (6 AM GMT in winter). London is the largest mining and commodity finance center for Australian iron ore, gold, and copper (BHP and Rio Tinto both have London co-HQs and Australian operations), so the London-Sydney corridor for mining finance is one of the most heavily trafficked anti-podal axes in global business. Outside mining, Australian banks (Macquarie, Commonwealth, Westpac) coordinate UK operations from their Sydney HQs on the same 8-9 AM London / 6-7 PM Sydney window.
