Central European Time runs six hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time during the US winter, the standard transatlantic gap between New York and continental Europe (Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam, Brussels, Warsaw). From late March until late October, the US observes EDT (UTC-4) and CET shifts to CEST (UTC+2), so the gap stays at six hours because both sides observe DST. But the dates are slightly different: Europe shifts on the last Sunday of March, the US on the second Sunday of March, so there is a two-week window in March when the gap is five hours rather than six. There is another similar window in late October-early November. The practical overlap window is 2 PM CET to 5 PM CET (8 AM to 11 AM EST), which catches the European afternoon and the New York morning. Major US banks (Goldman, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley) and consulting firms (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) run this corridor every working day; the muscle memory is well-developed. Book the call for 3 PM Paris (9 AM New York) and you cannot get it wrong.
Solid overlap from 8-11 AM EST (2-5 PM CET in winter, 2-5 PM CEST in summer), with 9 AM EST the standard anchor.
Default to 9 AM Eastern (3 PM CET in winter). Both sides are warm, neither side is rushed. For market-coordination calls, 8 AM EST is 2 PM CET, which is fine for European afternoon work. For end-of-day reviews where Europe needs to drive, 11 AM EST is 5 PM CET, late but still inside office hours. Avoid the two DST transition windows (mid-to-late March and late October to early November) when the US and Europe shift on different dates and the gap drops temporarily to five hours.
Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam are the three largest financial centers in continental Europe, and US-Europe equity coordination is dominated by these three markets. The Frankfurt DAX opens at 9 AM CET (3 AM EST), and the NYSE opens at 9:30 AM EST (3:30 PM CET). The overlap between the two market-open sessions (9:30 AM EST to 5:30 PM CET, which is the same as 9:30 AM EST to 11:30 AM EST) is the densest hour for transatlantic equity trading, M&A coordination, and sell-side research distribution. Outside finance, Brussels-based EU regulatory coordination (DG COMP, EBA) operates on CET and is the primary cross-Atlantic regulatory corridor for US firms with EU exposure.
