Central Standard Time runs one hour behind Eastern Standard Time, the smallest US time-zone gap most teams will routinely cross. Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Nashville, and New Orleans all live on CST, while New York, Boston, Atlanta, and the entire eastern seaboard sit on EST. The one-hour gap is small enough that most people think they can ignore it, which is exactly why it traps so many scheduled meetings. A 9 AM Eastern call to a Chicago colleague is an 8 AM Central call, and nobody loves an 8 AM call. A 4 PM Central call to a New York client is 5 PM Eastern, by which point the New York attendee has already started commuting home. Both zones observe daylight saving on the same dates (second Sunday of March, first Sunday of November), so the one-hour gap is consistent year-round. EST shifts to EDT and CST shifts to CDT at the same instant, and the offset between them never changes. The largest practical implication is that Mexico City sits inside CST (the country no longer observes DST since 2022), so Mexico-to-Chicago is now a constant one-hour-zero gap in winter and a one-hour gap in summer, where it was once a year-round zero gap.
Almost the entire working day overlaps. 10 AM to 4 PM Central (11 AM to 5 PM Eastern) is the unambiguous shared window, with 10 AM Central the safest default.
Default to 10 AM Central (11 AM Eastern) for cross-zone meetings. Both sides are well into their working day, neither is rushed, and the slot is not adjacent to lunch on either coast. If the East needs to drive the call, 9 AM Eastern (8 AM Central) is workable but ungenerous to the Central side. For end-of-day status updates, 4 PM Central (5 PM Eastern) loses East Coast attention to commute mode, so push status updates to 3 PM Central (4 PM Eastern) instead. The lunch hours line up almost identically (12 PM local on both sides), so never schedule across the lunch window assuming the other side is free.
Chicago is the financial center for derivatives and commodities (CME Group, CBOE), and those markets follow a 8:30 AM Central open (9:30 AM Eastern) tied to the NYSE opening bell. This means Chicago finance professionals are also at their desks by 7 AM Central. Outside finance, Texas's energy industry (Houston) operates on conventional 9-to-5 Central. The Central Time band is the largest by population in the US, covering 90 million people from the Gulf Coast to the Canadian border, so any 'US business hours' assumption that defaults to Eastern is leaving a third of the country waiting.
