What is Europe/Madrid?

Europe/Madrid is famous because Spain uses Central European Time despite much of the country lying near the Greenwich meridian. The shift from Greenwich-aligned time to CET occurred during the Franco period in the 1940s, and the result still shapes debate about late schedules, daylight, and productivity. The IANA zone records Spain's national and EU-coordinated summer-time rules, while the Canary Islands remain on a separate western zone. The mismatch between solar time and civil time is part of the zone's modern identity and not a software error.

Madrid's clock culture is later than northern Europe. Lunch can be long and relatively late, dinner often starts well after 9:00 p.m., and some offices still split the day even as many corporate employers move toward continuous schedules. Meetings before 9:00 a.m. can be unpopular, while late-afternoon calls are normal. International teams should avoid reading the CET offset as evidence that Madrid behaves like Berlin. Summer Fridays, vacation periods, and public-sector hours can shift availability further, especially outside urgent banking or technology work.

Europe/Madrid is used for Spanish banking, government, tourism, football media, telecoms, energy, and Iberian regional operations. It is especially relevant for consumer campaigns because prime-time television, dinner, and retail rhythms are shifted later than many other European markets sharing the same UTC offset. Use it for mainland Spain and Balearic work; Canary Islands schedules need a different one-hour-earlier zone.
