How Olympic timing works

The modern Olympic calendar follows a four-year rhythm for each edition of the Games. The Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics each keep their own Olympiad-style cycle, so a host city normally prepares for a single event that belongs to a fixed four-year slot. That rhythm is why Los Angeles 2028 follows Paris 2024, and Brisbane 2032 follows Los Angeles 2028.

Summer and Winter Games are staggered by two years, which keeps the Olympic movement in the public calendar more often without placing both editions in the same year. The Winter Games arrive in 2026, 2030, and 2034, while the Summer Games land in 2028 and 2032.
