Time zone comparison
Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-04:00) vs India Standard Time (IST, UTC+05:30). Right now EST is 9h behind IST.
Heads up: these zones diverge on daylight saving.
EST observes DST while IST does not, so the gap shifts by an hour twice a year. In January the difference is 10h, in July it is 9h. If you are scheduling across the spring or autumn transitions, double-check the date.
Each row is one hour. Green rows are when both sides are inside 9 AM to 5 PM.

India Standard Time runs ten hours and thirty minutes ahead of Eastern Standard Time, one of the widest gaps inside conventional business-hour coordination. New York-to-Bangalore is a foundational corridor for US enterprise software, IT services, and back-office finance. The gap is wide enough that direct overlap is almost zero during conventional 9-to-5 hours on either side. Practical coordination falls into two patterns: the US side takes early-morning calls (7-9 AM EST, which is 5:30-7:30 PM IST) when India is still in their late afternoon and evening; or the India side takes late-evening calls (8:30-10:30 PM IST, which is 10 AM to 12 PM EST). Most US-India teams converge on the early window because it is more sustainable. A 9 AM EST standing meeting lands at 7:30 PM IST, which is recognized as legitimate end-of-day client time in the Indian IT services industry. Note that the gap shifts: EST is UTC-5, EDT is UTC-4, and India stays at UTC+5:30 year-round. From November to March the gap is 10h30; from March to November it is 9h30. This affects what a 'normal 9 AM standing meeting' actually means in India, so calendar invites must store the New York time and let the India side render their own.
Realistic overlap is 8-10 AM EST (6:30-8:30 PM IST in winter), with 9 AM EST the typical anchor for sustained US-India coordination.
Default to 9 AM Eastern (7:30 PM IST in winter, 6:30 PM IST in summer). The India side gets the call inside their working day rather than after dinner. For longer working sessions, 8 AM Eastern (6:30 PM IST in winter, 5:30 PM IST in summer) lets the India side run through-end-of-day without overtime. For mid-day calls driven by the US side, 11 AM EST is 9:30 PM IST, which is workable for occasional but not recurring meetings. Avoid afternoon-EST schedules entirely; they always land after 11 PM IST and burn out the India team within weeks.
The US is the largest customer base for the Indian IT services industry by spend, and New York and the East Coast host most of the US-side coordination. The big four Indian IT services firms (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) all run dedicated US-hour shift teams where Indian engineers explicitly work US business hours; a 'night shift' in Bangalore is 6 PM IST to 3 AM IST and is paid at a premium. For non-IT-services US-India business (finance back-office, consulting research support, US captive centers like Goldman Sachs Bangalore, JPMC Mumbai), the standard is daily handoff calls at 8-9 AM EST and asynchronous workflow the rest of the day.
